"You have the most amazing way of explaining theory and actually making it come alive. . . . Your influence has been tremendous."

"Your immense knowledge and warm enthusiasm combine to make theory lessons a true pleasure."

"Learning theory with you changed my whole way of seeing, hearing and teaching music!"

"Infectious enthusiasm!"

"The Skype doesn't diminish the benefits of your extraordinary instruction one iota."

Many people have commented with wonder that they hear music entirely differently after learning the "language" of the composer. Applying one's understanding of this language to the interpretation of a piece of music is the essence of Music Theory, and I believe that beautiful playing stems in large part from this study.

Application of Music Theory to performance requires knowledge of its grammar and vocabulary, which expands to the structure of this musical language. My life work has been to develop a system of presenting Music Theory to individuals or to small groups in a way that makes it immediately accessible and applicable to playing a person's instrument.

I am eager to tailor the material to fit each student's particular goals. The following, which can be combined in various ways to accommodate each individual, are representative of units of study available:
  • Building Blocks of Music
  • Form in Music
  • Language of Music
    • Baroque
    • Classic through Early Romantic
    • Later Romantic through Impressionistic
    • 20th Century
  • Theory and Aural Awareness preparation for Michigan's Student Achievement Testing
  • Theory and Ear Training preparation for California's Certificate of Merit
I am also available to consult with teachers on techniques for helping to prepare their students for testing programs or to discuss individual questions.

Skype is a very effective means of communicating with live sound and picture. It is usually very easy to install and is free!
